Luke 7:41-42, “A certain moneylender had two debtors, one who owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. Which one of them, therefore, will love him more?” Today is the last day to pay and file your taxes. So many have waited until the last day to file because they owe. They think that by waiting, maybe they will think of something to make them pay less. They’ve put off sending in their taxes and now it’s their last opportunity to pay without a penalty. They can file an extension to file, but it doesn’t give them an extension to pay. It’s due today. I m a tax preparer and it amazes me the sheer number of people who are in a panic today because they are owing money to the IRS. The number of calls we will answer today to help them file is beyond imagination. They’ve waited until the last minute to file. I think of those who think they have time to give their hearts to God. How many have put off accepting Jesus. They think they have time. They’ve put off until the very end to submit their lives to Him. Maybe they too are thinking, I will file an extension, that way I will have time to save up what is needed to pay the debt. The thing is, there is no extension to pay the debt it starts accruing penalties and interest if not paid today. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.” They think they can file an extension to let God know how much they owe. If you don’t file an extension and owe taxes, you have two penalties that start accruing right away: a penalty for not filing and a penalty for not paying. These two penalties have the same consequences .5% of the taxes owed. They run concurrently for each month or part of the month the return is not filed. Why am I giving a tax lesson in this blog? To let you know that if today was your last chance to accept Jesus as your Savior, would you be in a panic to submit to Him? Would you hope there was a way to extend the time? In taxes once you file, one penalty stops, but the other continues until paid. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The wages of sin is death, but the FREE gift of God is eternal life. Whether you owe five hundred denarii or fifty that you are unable to pay, God graciously forgives us if we submit to Him. It’s time, today is the day, to submit.
