Matthew 21:28-30, “But what do you think? A man had two sons and he came to the first and said “Son go work today in the vineyard, and he answered and said “I will sir; and he did not. And he came to the second son and said the same thing. But he answered and said “I will not, yet he afterward regretted it and went?” The conviction of the heart is described in these verses. The first son gave lip-service. He told the father what he wanted to hear in words only. “I will sir, and he did not”. The other son told the father, “I will not, yet afterward regretted it and went.” What a perfect example of true service. This was the parable Jesus spoke to the chief priest and elders when they asked Him by what authority He was doing these things and who gave Him the authority. When Jesus asked, “Which of the two did the will of his father? They were correct when they answered, “the latter”. We all have seen hypocrisy at some point in our life. A few more words for hypocrisy are, lip-service, entitlement, and putting self first. We see the first son’s “I will” and the second son’s “I will not.” These are just words leaving the mouth. The true message of this parable are the actions that followed. The first son it reads “did not go.” The second son, “afterwards regretted it and went.” The second son felt sad and disappointed over the words spoken to his father. He repented and went to do what the father asked of him. The first son not only had no regret for not doing the will of the father, but believed by just saying “I will” was enough to satisfy his father. Be not deceived. Actions come from the heart. Words are only superficial nonsense when spoken without action. Even the pharisees recognized who did the father’s will.
