Take out the trash

Colossians 3:2-3, “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” The stench of a decaying animal or a garbage can in summer heat is something that gets your attention. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” As you read Colossians 3, it tells us to consider the members of our earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, and greed (verse 5). Verse 7 says, “and in them you have once walked when you were living in them.” We are told since we laid aside the old self with its evil practices and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created Him, that our walk should be different than our old self. Something decaying was brought to my mind as I was reading these verses. How the stench of sin should not be attached to any believer. If Christ is in us, we should have a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:14 tells us, “And beyond all things put on love which is the perfect bond of unity.” 2 Corinthians 2:15 says, “For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those being saved and among those who are perishing.” Ephesians 5:1-2, says “Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children and walk in love as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Lord, let me walk this life as a pleasing aroma to you daily and give me wisdom to know when the trash needs to be taken out.
