John 20:24-25 “But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them “Unless I shall see in His hands the imprint of the nails and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” Thomas was one of the twelve disciples who had been with Jesus. Who had witnessed the miracles performed. Who had heard the teachings of Jesus. He was told by Jesus directly what was going to happen. That He would be crucified for our sins, that after three days would rise again to defeat the grave. Yet when told by the others they had seen Jesus, Thomas doubted it was Jesus they had seen. Thomas would only believe that it was Jesus if he could see the wounds and place his hand in Jesus’s side. The scripture doesn’t stop there. It goes on in verses 27-29 “Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger and see My hands, and reach here your hand and put it into My side, and be not unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and My God.” Jesus said to him “Because you have seen Me have you believed? Blessed are they who do not see and yet believe.” This passage is telling us that doubts don’t change the truth. There may be those you have shared the gospel with that don’t believe what you are saying about Jesus. They are wanting to see if for themselves. Each person’s experience with coming to believe in Jesus differs. These passages teach us that Jesus allowed Thomas to see the wounds and witness for himself the truth. John 20:30-31, “Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book, but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” When we realize that doubts don’t change the truth, that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing we may have life in His name, just as Thomas, our doubts can be relieved.
