John 14:56, “Thomas said to Him, “Lord we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way? Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.’” It has been almost five years since I moved to Illinois. One of the biggest challenges has been locating a destination. In Utah, the mountains were my direction. I knew the mountains were to the east. All the streets are on a grid system. I became familiar with getting around using the grid. Streets had names such as 1111 North 2000 West. It was easy to follow directions to get someplace. Here in Illinois, people give directions with landmarks. They would say, “Do you know where the old Pizza Hut was? Turn right and your doctor is on that street.” Imagine my confusion, I didn’t know where the ‘old Pizza hut’ was. My favorite was when I was going to pick up a piece of furniture to refinish into a kitchen island. We used my phone’s GPS but lost signal on the way. When I got to a spot with enough signal, I called the lady for directions. Well, she told me “Past the cornfield on the right, her driveway led to her house off the road a bit.” This was not helpful. We had passed acres of cornfields. She told me it’s “south past the Johnson’s place”. Again, not helpful. I needed my mountains and the grid. This scripture reminds me of my panic and frustration of finding how to get where I am going and not knowing the way. Verse six brings me incredible comfort. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; and no one comes to the Father but through me.” He is my mountain, my direction. As long as I can see the mountain, I am not lost. I know where I am going and how to get there. It’s when I don’t see the mountain that I begin to lose my way. I think of how the mountain view directed me. It was always there, it never moved. Every day I could rely on it being there. It didn’t get cut down one season and the next season it is soybeans. I am so thankful Jesus never changes. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.” He is unchanging, immovable, and a constant presence to put me in the right direction. I just need to look to Him to know where I am going.
