How’s your heart?

1 Samuel 16:7, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his outward appearance, because I have rejected him: for God does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”. There is a commercial with a guy who sets up a kiosk on the street and will stop people to talk about a new device that measures the early warning signs of the condition of the heart. He asks them, “How’s your heart?” When they respond their heart is fine, he asks, how they know. He gives an analogy of how our cars have a check engine light when something needs to be fixed. If ever there is a warning and the promise of hope written in the Bible, this scripture is it. It is telling us not to judge and also not to limit the power of God. “Do not look at the outward appearance.” The Lord sees the heart. We need to check the condition of our heart at all times. What is God seeing in us? Do we ignore the warning signs He gives? Have we allowed our eyes to see the outward appearance of people? When we do this, we enter into dangerous territory about our own relationship with God. Romans 8:26-27 says, “And in the same way the Spirit helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” How’s your heart? Is your check engine light on?
