Recognize God

Luke 24:30-32, “And it came about that when He reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it; and breaking it, He began giving it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us.” Right after I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, we were stationed in Augusta, Georgia. We had a blue station wagon that the transmission was going out. It could not go into reverse. My husband was in the military, and we didn’t have a lot of money. Especially any extra money to get the car fixed or to buy another one. We would just make sure we could always drive forward in it. One day on my way to a job interview, I turned down the wrong road. It was a dead-end street. It was in the inner city of Augusta. I was wearing a dress for my interview. As I came to a stop at the end of the street, I realized my predictament. I couldn’t drive forward and had to turn around. The only way to do this was to put the car into reverse. As I turned the wheel hoping to be able to do a circle and get out of this area, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to turn the wheel enough to drive the car forward. The area I was in had a lot of people just sitting on their steps watching. I began to feel afraid. Here I was stuck, there was no way my 5′, in heels and a dress, could push the car backwards. I couldn’t go forward another inch. I began to pray, “God, if ever I need this car to go into reverse it was now.” I suddenly wasn’t afraid and putting the lever to “R”, I pushed on the gas and the station wagon went smoothly backwards. I backed up and put it back to drive and turned the wheel. That big wagon went forward again, but still not enough to be able to completely straighten out. It would need to go back some more. I began to wonder if maybe that first time going backward was just a fluke. I again put the lever to “R” and thought to myself, no it wasn’t a fluke. God had His hands on the transmission. I stepped on the gas once more and back it went. I could now go forward. I began laughing and praising God. That car for months would never go into reverse. My husband would have to get out and push it backwards. I nodded as I drove past the people sitting on their steps. Smiling broadly as I drove forward, thinking what a mighty God, I serve. In my despair and fear, He was there. This scripture tells how two men were talking about all that had happened. Jesus joined them as they walked and asked what they were talking about. The men told Him about Jesus, the Nazarene, how He was a mighty prophet in deed and word. How he was delivered up to be sentenced to death and was crucified. They told Him how they had hoped He was the redeemer. They told Him when the women went to the grave, and He wasn’t there. Jesus said to them in verses 25 and 26, “And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer and to enter into His glory?” When I got home later that day, I told my husband about what had happened. How God had put the car into reverse. I had pulled into the driveway when I got home, something we never did. We went outside so I could show him how the car could go into reverse. It didn’t go into reverse. When I got in it to show him, it just revved up like normal and didn’t move. He had to push it back out onto the street. The made me more joyful as it only confirmed that when I need God most, He is always there. Hallelujah! Recognize when God does something in your life. It is Him watching over you.
