I can do all things

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. I think of this scripture when struggling with something difficult. I’ve always thought it was a scripture for not giving up when life is difficult. It is a comforting scripture. To have faith that whatever life gives you, you can do all things to overcome. However, the words of this scripture need to be taken as a whole sentence and together with the previous verse. I’ve quoted this verse during many difficult times. But the previous verse 12 says, “I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.” Then, verse 13 has meaning. These words tell us that through all circumstances we understand that Christ strengthens us. The I can do all things, is not just getting through the difficult times, but knowing that in all things or situations Christ strengthens us. Knowing that it is Christ strengthening us is the reason we can get along with humble needs or prosperity, of being filled or hungry, of having abundance or suffering. Our strength in all situations is Jesus. We forget, who, our strength comes from when everything is going well. We cry out to God when we are in difficult situations and forget the times of ease. All things! In all things it is through Him, who strengthens us.
