Luke 10:57-62 “And as they were going along the road, someone said to Him, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay His head.” and He said to another “Follow me,” But he said, ‘Permit me first to go and bury my father.” But He said to him, “allow the dead to bury their own dead, but as for you go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” And another also said, I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.” But Jesus said to him, “no one after putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.” So many want or think they want to follow Jesus, but they think of something they first have to do. When things are convenient, they will follow Jesus, when it fits into their plans. How many times have we made an excuse not to do as God asks? These men were present when Jesus fed the 5000 with five loaves of bread and two fish. A miracle before their eyes. They partook of the miracle, saw with their own eyes the vast number fed and the leftover food. They wanted to follow Jesus but had things to do first. The word “but” became more important to them. Their eyes witnessed Jesus’s miracles, but their hearts did not. Was it because they felt entitled to eat and receive the food? After all they sat down to enjoy the food, they witnessed the miracles of healing, they heard Jesus’s teachings, yet there was something they found more important than following Jesus. Jesus was speaking to them about the kingdom of God. These scriptures challenge our hearts. Are we truly following Jesus, or only when it is convenient? Luke 10:62 ‘But Jesus said to them “no one after putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God. Lord, let me always go forward. Let me not find an excuse to not follow you each day. Have mercy, Lord when I walk in the flesh. Let my heart follow you. Do not let there be a “but” in my walk.
