Mark 9:21-24 “and He asked his father, ‘How long has this been happening to him? And he said “from childhood. And it has often thrown him both in the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us.’ And Jesus said to him “If You can! All things are possible to him who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father cried out and began saying, ‘I do believe, help my unbelief.’ Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and it came out of the boy. There are times our faith wavers. We believe in Jesus, but doubt comes in to question our faith. This man’s cry to help his unbelief and Jesus casting out the unclean spirit, shows us that though our belief or faith is wavering, when we cry out to Jesus to help our unbelief, He can move in any situation. Mark 9:25 says when the disciples asked Jesus why they couldn’t cast out the demon, “And He said to them, this kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.” There are situations in our lives where unbelief holds us back from seeing the hand of God work in our situation. The man’s prayer was for Jesus to help his unbelief. Matthew 17:20 Jesus said to his disciples when asked why they could not cast out a demon, “And He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith, for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain move from here to there, and it shall move and nothing shall be impossible to you. But this kind does not go out except for prayer and fasting.” Again, Jesus is telling His disciples only by prayer. When we seek God, we set our minds on God’s interest. Matthew 16:23, Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind me Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you are not setting your mind on God’s interest, but man’s.” When our faith waivers, we need to go to Him in prayer for our unbelief. Once we seek him, we seek God’s interest not our own. When we try to understand why something is happening in our lives that isn’t going as “we” planned, seeking God brings about the solution of His interest.
