Revelations 2:2-5 “I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot endure evil men, and you put to test those who call themselves apostles and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen and repent and do the deeds you did at first or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place – unless you repent.” There is often a saying about the honeymoon period is over. We think of this as a time when a couple or a new idea loses its attraction. We become set in our ways. Maybe it’s new management at our jobs. We are enthusiastic at first about the new ideas, but our enthusiasm begins to fade and become routine. Revelation 2:2-5 tells us that we persevere, we call out false prophets. We go about the tasks, but our first love is forgotten. Our first love is special and has an impact on us. It is a time where every moment feels heightened and special. Most of us can remember their first love. God is saying in this passage that we haven’t grown weary, but we have forgotten that first encounter we had when we accepted Jesus into our hearts. The joy we had to know our sins were forgiven and that we have enteral life. The enthusiasm we had to tell others about Jesus and that He was the only way, the truth and the life. That pull to tell others what Jesus has done for them. That sharing of joy so others could know Jesus. Have you become content in serving God? Is your service just routine? Each of the messages to the churches in the book of Revelations chapters 2 and 3, end with “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Lord let me stay focused on my first love. Let me not get into a routine but have the enthusiasm and the joy to let others know about You.
