Luke 23:44-45 “and it was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. The sun being obscured and the veil of the temple was torn in two”. Mark 15:38 “And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Matthew 27:51-53 “And behold the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom and the earth shook and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and coming out of the tombs, after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.” John 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” and He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit.” Let’s try to understand the significance of these scriptures. In Exodus 26:33 “and you shall hang up the veil under the clasps and shall bring in the ark of the testimony there within the veil; and the veil shall serve for you a partition between the holy place and the holy of holies. And you shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the holy of holies.” The veil separated the priest from the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant. The veil made it clear that there was a division between the holy and the unholy. It represented that access to God was only available to those who were worthy enough to approach Him. God’s mercy seat sat on the ark of the covenant. When the veil was torn from top to bottom and Jesus cried out “It is finished!” we now have access to God’s mercy through Jesus’ death. There is now no separating us from the love of God. The perfect sacrifice was presented to God. No longer do we have to have a priest to intercede for us. The veil was torn in two. God’s grace and mercy was made available to everyone through Jesus’ death. Ephesians 2:4-8 “But God being rich in mercy, because of His great love which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, for by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” The significance of the veil being torn in two is we now have access to God’s mercy and His covenant. Hallelujah!
