Where are you?

Genesis 3:8-9 “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man and said to him “Where are you?” This passage is so powerful to understand. God created man in His image and was pleased. He gave Adam and Eve everything they needed. Every tree that bore fruit was available to them. When they had been deceived by the serpent and ate from the tree of good and evil, they realized that they were naked and made for themselves coverings. When God took the man into garden, He told Adam, from every tree of the garden you may eat freely, but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day you eat from it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:16, 17. By partaking of the tree of knowledge Adam and Eve disobeyed God. I think before that time there wasn’t a meaning for obedience and disobedience. Yet when eating the fruit, they experienced the knowledge of disobedience and were afraid of God. They were ashamed of knowing they were naked and tried to hide their nakedness. They also tried to hide from God so He wouldn’t find out what they had done. When we sin, we try to cover up our actions from God. We hide from Him. God knew what Adam and Eve had done. He sought them out in the garden by walking among them. When God called to the man and said, “Where are you?” Adam said I heard the sound of Thee in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked and hid myself. God asked Adam if he had eaten from the tree which He commanded him not to eat and Adam gave God the first excuse written in the Bible. He blamed the woman. The woman gave the second excuse, the serpent deceived me. God may be asking “Where are you?”. Scripture says if we know to do good and don’t, we have sinned. Are we in our walk with God trying to cover up our sins? Are we hiding from God? Are we finding excuses for not obeying God by blaming others for our disobedience? Psalms 73:2 says, “But for me, my feet came close to stumbling, my steps almost slipped.” Just as the serpent deceived Eve to eat of the tree, he is coming against us as well. The sin of disobedience, that was the action they were hiding. We need to examine our walk in Christ at all times. Are our feet stumbling, our steps slipping away? David says in Psalm 73:25-28 “Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And besides Thee, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For behold those who are far from Thee will perish. Thou has destroyed all those who are unfaithful to Thee. But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord my refuge, that I may tell all of Thy works.” “Where are you?” says God. We may be stumbling and our feet slipping, but if we draw near to God we will not fall. God says He will stand by us; we are not alone. Joshua 2:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong, and courageous. Do not trouble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Isaiah 41:13 “For I am the Lord, your God, who upholds your right hand. Who says to you ‘Do not fear, I will help you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord Your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” All these scriptures came after Adam and Eve. God continues to ask, ‘Where are you?” and also continues to tell us He is with us and will not fail or forsake us.
